The True Story of the Whaleship Essex

Built in 1799, the American whaleship Essex operated from Nantucket, Massachusetts, one of the most important whaling ports of the early 19th century.

On November 20, 1820, while sailing in the Pacific Ocean under the command of Captain George Pollard Jr., the Essex was struck repeatedly by a large sperm whale. The attacks caused catastrophic damage, forcing the crew to abandon their sinking ship.

The twenty surviving crew members initially escaped aboard three small whaleboats, beginning an extraordinary struggle for survival across thousands of miles of open ocean. Only eight men ultimately survived the ordeal.

The tragedy became one of the most famous events in American maritime history and contributed to the inspiration behind Herman Melville's 1851 novel, Moby-Dick.
