Tagawa Kunisada is a Japanese artist belonging to the ukiyo-e movement, "image of the floating world" in French, like his contemporaries Hokusai and Hiroshige. In this Stormy Day on the Sumida River triptych dated 1844, the artist depicts courtesans on the banks of the Sumida River which crosses Tokyo.
